Created in 2019 at Mounir Sakho’s creative studio at 60 Greene Street in SoHo, New York, this jacket represents another significant milestone in his technical development as a designer and tailor. The olive-toned marbled leather was developed by hand using a traditional water-marbling process involving seaweed-derived carrageenan and alum. Applying the technique to soft leather allowed Mounir to explore the relationship between traditional surface treatments and luxury materials, producing a distinctive textile characterized by organic patterns and variations in color. The finished garment was cut, constructed, and assembled entirely from scratch, combining the hand-marbled leather sleeves with a structured varsity silhouette. The work marked a progression in Mounir’s understanding of textile manipulation, material compatibility, and garment construction, extending his experimentation beyond conventional fabrics into leather. An early exploration of how traditional techniques could be reinterpreted through contemporary luxury garment design.
