Created in 2019 at Mounir’s creative studio at 60 Greene Street in SoHo, New York, this jacket represents an early milestone in Mounir Sakho’s technical development as a designer and tailor. The distinctive marbled textile was developed by hand using a traditional water-marbling process involving seaweed-derived carrageenan and alum, allowing the artist to experiment with surface pattern, pigmentation, and textile manipulation. The resulting fabric was then cut, constructed, and assembled into a finished denim jacket entirely from scratch. The work marked a significant progression in Mounir’s understanding of garment construction, demonstrating an ability to move beyond designing silhouettes toward developing the materials from which they are made. An early expression of the technical independence and material experimentation that would become central to his creative practice.
