Developed over five years of independent study and experimentation, the LUMÈRE Debut Collection marked the first complete expression of the fashion house founded by Mounir Sakho. At seventeen, Mounir Sakho was searching for clarity — about himself, his work, and the kind of designer he wanted to become. While exploring a book of African textiles assembled by his mother, one fabric stood apart. It was labeled Lumière. When he asked what it meant, she told him: “It represents you.” Mounir — meaning light. Rooted in generations of Guinean textile and fashion traditions, the collection interprets inheritance through a contemporary New York perspective. Tailoring, structured outerwear, relaxed silhouettes, and knitwear are united by recurring symbols, including the Étoile and Palm Red, establishing a visual language that would become central to the house’s identity. Developed through a self-taught practice of deconstructing and reconstructing garments, the Debut Collection represents five years of artistic exploration and the formation of a distinct design philosophy: clothing as a means of authorship, through which individuals express and shape their identities. Clothing, designed as a system of presence.
